Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers! Why Do We?

zebraTry to explain a traffic jam to a hippo, and it’s going to have no idea what you’re talking about. We do, and we turn on the same stress-response as wild mammals do when they are running for their lives or for a meal. The animals won’t survive, whether they are prey or the attacker who is needing a meal, unless they turn on a stress-response to get the body to re-establish homeostasis or equilibrium to keep you functioning at optimal levels. The stress-response is exactly what we want to have happen if we are running away from a predator!

We humans activate the stress-response for reasons of psychological factors, and that’s simply not what the system is for. If you chronically turn it on by merely thinking stressful, negative thoughts, you’re going to get sick. Most of us will have the luxury of dropping dead someday of a stress-related diseases. 1

So whether we have a thought, emotion or memory in the brain, this will turn on physiological changes in the body. When this stress-response is turned on over and over, everything from ulcers to full-blown heart attacks can occur because of the imbalances of chemicals in our body. Stress is linked to diabetes, weight issues, a weakened immune system, cancer, depression, and learning and memory disruption just for starters!

So, why don’t zebras get ulcers? They are only going to turn that stress-response system on when facing life or death situations. Statistically speaking, how many times do you think they can escape being dinner for the lion who just chased it down? So they might use their stress-response a few times during their entire lifetime!

Here are a few of my favorite stress relief tips – Take a deep breath! – exercise – sing a song –  eat right – call a friend – ask others to help – visualize a peaceful scene – Take a deep breath! – massage tense muscles – meditate – think a positive thought – learn to say “no” – Take a deep breath! – do energy tapping – try yoga – take a hot bath – screen your calls – give a hug – hang out with positive people – Take a deep breath and schedule a whole energy healing session to greatly reduce your everyday stress!

      Just keep a list of topics you want to work on. Shoot for 1-3 articles a week. If you need some writing training, join e-zine articles. They have great newsletters. Yes, this is a WordPress platform that works great!
